The presence, absence, color, and size of the mane is associated with genetic precondition, sexual maturity, climate, and testosterone production; the rule of thumb is the darker and fuller the mane, the healthier the lion (other things being equal). The Kalahari lions are renowned for the large size and black manes. This one was in beautiful condition.

Magnificent black-maned Kalahari Lion
Last week we spotted this magnificent black-maned lion at Tswalu Kalahari, South Africa.
